Beatrice Margot was walking along County Road 17 in Krosen county in the kingdom of Charnra, somewhere between abandoned cities left dead and dry from the famine, with the sun in the sky and the humidity bearing down. She eyed the empty canteen in her right hand and cursed the half-eaten sandwich in her left. The Iokyu existed on the world before even the other races came, and are among the elder beings that inhabited the world before the building of the stele or the dreams of Hornhead, depending on whose creation story you heed. They once fed on the Ancients in the time of the Mother of All Things, much like how sharks feed on schools of fish. Their civilization has crumbled, and they now flicker like ghosts through the world. Their mana is that of outsiders, and the powers they can grant to petitioners and the magic they still use is foreign, in addition to the pacts they can forge with spirits as a race held to the Bargain of the Wheel. In their natural form, they resemble nothing more than shadows or black fire with three solid white eyes. To affect the world, however, they must possess a host, anchoring themselves to a soul and a body. Usually done when their chosen host has not acquired an orgus of its own, the host of the Iokyu manifests a physical third eye.

They have no technology of their own. They steal it all, but have no negative cultural connotation to it. There is a belief system among them that sees their hosts as divine beings, since possession allows them to actually interact with the world, and development of their own technology as a sin.

Ah, so these are the milk drinkers.

Cool.

But especially for human cultures, what is the reaction of the community to an Iokyu-possessed individual?

And what, exactly, is an Orgus?

I gotta read these books so I stop asking all these questions.

These are not the milk drinkers. Those are the narhoojai (who are descended from the Ancients, the iokyu's old prey), I will get to them in a bit. Iokyu are a "secret race." They're not generally known about by the public at large, and they tend to hide themselves rather well - in a culture that uses headbands a lot, they're perfectly capable of doing so.

The orgus is a soul component. There are three primary components that contribute to the aura complex: the proxy, which is all the parts that create and allow physical interaction with the world, the soul, which allows perception of an interaction with metaphors and is subdivided into several parts (most of which are devoted to metaphor-proxy interaction; the soul is "hard wired" in some cases, and can learn to expand these functions, this is very important for things like shape-shifters. I dun wanna get into it here, it gets complimacated), and the orgus is everything "unique" about an individual. Thoughts, memories, ideas, all that stuff. It's subdivided into several other parts, and is usually spread through the complex like a infectious mold. Digging it out normally requires that you tear the complex apart from the metaphor side. Iokyu are essentially a wandering orgus with no proxy of their own. They're descended from primitive alien memes similar to the language/yeeneegahleessdee, but rather than, well, a method of communication that steadily grew more complex, they were born independently in the noosphere's ecology.
