They came up out of the water, thick-bodied, roach-like things with five crab eyes and freckled barnacle carapaces. The scrabbled up over the docks like sea lice, across the surface, hanging below, and even among the pillars, big as a sitting desk and shining in the moonlight. They had two arms each, and four legs, but beyond those were degenerate little legs, flattened into paddles that stuck out the side like oars, and they all had bilious growths like mussels or extra tentacles that lay flat rather than struggle to rise in the thin air, and in a moment he realized what he thought were mutations of form or parasites were instead clothing and tools. _____________

They're true aliens. Moon-dwellers and memetic space demon viruses aside, Opanians are from another universe entirely. They've gotten stuck and while it's hard to tell where their technology ends and they begin, they claim they got it from -humans- of all places. They have since been in contact with the ocean itself, and while the idea of contracting with metaphors is still very alien to their culture, they seem to be getting the hang of it, albeit extremely slow by human standards.
