The trick is to get some acetone in a little dish, then grab yourself a foil common. Take the card and slowly dip the corner, face down, into the acetone; don't get any onto the back of the card (with the Magic logo). Dip-tap it a few times, and you should be able to start sliding an exacto blade under the printed surface of the card. After that, it just peels right up. If you're not careful you get too much, but otherwise it slides right off. You get a lot of foil crinkly paper out of it, too. Try not to get any actual acetone on your hooves, otherwise, anypony can do it. There's a place here that sells grab-bags of foil commons, I just grabbed some of those.

If it's a Mercadian Masques-era foil card, you can use acetone to just rub the ink right off; you get a blank foil card out of it, but that's only useful if you have transparency paper, which I do not have yet.

The revealed surface is actually really good for accepting pencil and marker, as you can see from the human token I made.
